Flower power sandwich

If you're teaching your daughter how to cook this is one of the easiest recipes for her to try. It's also a lot of fun for them to create a flower sandwich all by themselves.

If they prefer they can use of their favorite deli meats instead of the ham. The key to a good sandwich is balance. You want a good mix of textures and flavors, so feel free to experiment with the suggestions below and find what works best for you and your daughter. Enjoy your cooking time together!

Ingredients

1 tomato (large, washed and sliced)
8 lettuce (lettuce leaves, washed)
8 sli ham (deli ham sliced thin)
8 sli cheese
1 cn dough (refrigerated biscuit dough, 16 oz can)

Instructions

Allow the oven to preheat to 350° F.

Separate the dough into 8 biscuits then separate each biscuit into 2 pieces.

Place the biscuit halves onto a cookie sheet and press it out to 3 1/2 inch circle.

Bake the biscuits for 12 minutes or until nice and brown on top.

Use kitchen scissors and make short cuts around the edges of 8 of the biscuit halves while still warm to form a sunflower.

Use a pastry brush and lightly brush the center of the 8 cut biscuits with the mayonnaise.

Sprinkle 1/2 tsp of the sunflower seeds into the middle of each of the prepared biscuits.

Turn the other half of the biscuits upside down.

Place a lettuce leaf, a slice of tomato, a slice of ham and a slice on cheese onto each of the upturned biscuit halves.

Top with the sunflower top.

Notes

Chicken: Instead of ham, use cooked, shredded chicken. You could also use a rotisserie chicken for convenience.

Seafood: Replace the ham with tuna salad or smoked salmon for a seafood twist.

Greek: Use feta cheese instead of regular cheese, add some cucumber slices and olives, and replace the mayonnaise with tzatziki sauce.

Italian: Use salami or prosciutto instead of ham, mozzarella instead of regular cheese, and add some basil leaves. You could also add a thin layer of pesto sauce.

Mexican: Use cooked, shredded beef or chicken, add some slices of avocado, and replace the mayonnaise with guacamole or salsa.

Gluten-Free: Use gluten-free biscuit dough for the sandwich base.

Vegetarian: Omit the ham and add more veggies like cucumber, bell peppers, or sprouts. You could also add a slice of tofu or a veggie patty.

Vegan: Replace the ham and cheese with vegan alternatives. You can also use a vegan mayonnaise. Add some avocado slices for extra creaminess.
