Baked macaroni cheese

Macaroni and cheese is a delicious and comforting dish made with pasta and a creamy cheese sauce. It's a favorite among kids and adults alike.

This easy recipe will help you make a tasty macaroni and cheese that you can enjoy with your family and friends.

Ingredients

8 oz pasta (elbow macaroni, about 2 cups)
2 c milk
1⁄4 c butter (1/2 stick)
1⁄4 c flour (all-purpose flour)
2 c cheese (shredded Cheddar cheese)
1⁄2 t salt (or to taste)
2 pn black pepper (optional, freshly ground)
1⁄2 c bread crumbs (optional, for topping)

Instructions

Follow the package directions to cook the elbow macaroni in a large pot of boiling water. When the macaroni is cooked, drain it in a colander and set it aside.

To make the cheese sauce, melt the butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add the flour and stir with a whisk for about 1 minute to make a paste. Slowly pour in the milk, whisking constantly to avoid lumps. Keep stirring until the sauce becomes thick and smooth, which will take about 5 minutes.

Turn off the heat and add the shredded cheddar cheese, salt, and black pepper (if using) to the sauce. Stir until the cheese melts and the sauce is smooth.

Pour the cheese sauce over the cooked macaroni in a large mixing bowl. Gently stir until the macaroni is evenly coated with the sauce.

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Transfer the macaroni and cheese mixture to a greased 9x13-inch baking dish. If you like a crunchy topping, sprinkle breadcrumbs over the top. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbly.

Let the macaroni and cheese cool for a few minutes before scooping it onto plates.
