Ice cream in a bag

Make your own delicious ice cream at home with just a few simple ingredients and a plastic bag! This fun activity is easy to do and a great way to enjoy ice cream with kids.

Ingredients

2 c milk (whole milk)
1⁄2 c sugar
1⁄4 c salt (rock salt)
1 gal ice (ice cubes or coarsely crushed ice)

Instructions

Mix together the milk, sugar, and vanilla extract in a large resealable plastic bag. Squeeze out excess air and seal tightly.

Fill a large bowl halfway with ice and rock salt.

Place the sealed bag into the ice bath, making sure it is fully submerged in the ice. Put on gloves to protect your hands from the cold.

Shake the bag vigorously for about 5 minutes each time until the mixture freezes and thickens into ice cream, 15-30 minutes.

Remove the bag from the ice bath and rinse off under cold water.

Open the bag, scoop into bowls, and enjoy your homemade ice cream!

Notes

The bag should be able to hold double volume than the amount of ingredients.

Let ice cream sit for a few minutes if too hard straight from the bag.

Variations

Use heavy cream instead of milk for richer ice cream.

For a chocolate ice cream in a bag, substitute 2-3 tablspoons of milk with the same amount of chocolate syrup.

Add mix-ins like chocolate chips or fruit before shaking.

Source

The mixture is cooled by the friction of the shaking, and the salt in the ice around the bag helps to lower the freezing point of the water, making it easier for the ice cream to freeze.

Ice and rock salt, this is the way old ice cream makers worked.
