French toast fresh from the oven

Reminds of a bread and butter pudding. It is very nice but definitely not a breakfast recipe for ever day.

Ingredients

1⁄2 lb bread (lightly stale bread, crust removed, cut into chunks)
4 egg (beaten)
1 1⁄2 c milk (or half and half)
1⁄4 c sugar
1 t cinnamon (and a little more to decorate)
1⁄2 t salt
3 T butter (optional, for the topping)
3⁄4 c sugar (optional, brown sugar, for the topping)
1⁄2 c walnuts (optional for the topping, chopped)

Instructions

Prepare the base

Butter a 9x9 inches baking dish. Layer the bread cubes in bottom.

In a bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, sugar, cinnamon, salt, and vanilla until sugar

is completely dissolved. Pour over bread cubes and cover. Chill for one hour.

Make the topping (optional)

In a small bowl, stir together butter, sugar, and walnuts with a fork until mixture is crumbly and butter is evenly distributed. Sprinkle this mixture over the soaked bread cubes.

Bake

Bake for 45 minutes at 350º F. Sprinkle a bit of ground cinnamon over the top and serve the oven baked French toast warm.
