Fruit kebabs

Fruit kebabs are scrumptious and easy to prepare. These constitute an ideal dessert for kids and an ideal opportunity to share the pleasure of cooking with them, as the kebabs can be served fresh and there are also instructions to cooke them with microwave oven.

Ingredients

  fruit (cut into even pieces)
  maple syrup (or honey)
3 oz chocolate (semi-sweet chocolate chips)

Instructions

Thread fruit on kebabs, alternating fruit of different color and texture.

Eat them right away, fresh, or wrap them in cling film and chill in the fridge for later.

If you wante to cook them, to microwave, heat the crunch plate on high for 5 minutes, or follow appliance instructions. Place kebabs on top of the crunch plate and cook on high 2 minutes on each side.

Alternatively, per-heat the broiler and brush fruit kebabs with maple syrup. Broil for 3-5 minutes or until caramelized.

Fresh or broiled, melt chocolate chips on a double boiler and drizzle a little melted chocolate over the kebabs just before serving.

Notes

Use your favorite fruits. Just peel, clean and dice all about the same size. For instance, bananas, pineapple, strawberries and apple are a nice combination.

For broiled kebabs, use:

  • bananas, sliced
  • strawberries, clean and stemmed, whole or halved if large
  • apricots or peaches, fresh, peeled or canned
  • pineapple, papaya, diced
  • figs
  • Apple or pear slices, thick slices, halved

For fresh fruit kebabs, use all of the above and:

  • Melon and watermelon chunks
  • Grapes

You can also omit the maple syrup and coat the fruit kebabs in vanilla flavored sugar and chill them for 1 hour before cooking or grilling.

For more sophisticated palates, add a little fresh mint.

If not melted chocolate, serve with cream, whipped cream, yogurt or ice cream.

You will also need 6 bamboo skewers, soaked in water for at least 20 minutes if broiling or grilling the kebabs. Cut the sharp points from the skewers after preparing the kebabs. If serving to young children, remove the skewers altogether.
