Sushi rice

Vinegared rice, also known as sushi rice, is the base of sushi rolls.

Ingredients

2 c rice (sushi rice, short-grain white rice)
2 1⁄2 c water
1⁄4 c vinegar (rice wine vinegar)
1 T sauce (tamari or soy sauce)
2 T sugar
1⁄2 t salt (optional)

Instructions

Pour the rice into a large bowl. Fill it with cold water and stir the rice around with your hands. Then, carefully pour out the water. Repeat this 3 times or until the water is mostly clear.

Put the cleaned rice and the 2 1/2 cups of water into a pot. Cover it with a lid.

Put the pot on the stove and turn the heat to high. Wait until the water starts boiling (you might hear it bubbling).

Once it's boiling, turn the heat to low and let it cook for 15 minutes. Don't lift the lid, just let it do its thing!

After 15 minutes, turn off the stove but don't remove the lid yet. Let the pot sit there for 10 more minutes.

While waiting, mix the rice vinegar, tamari or soy sauce, sugar, and salt in a small bowl until the sugar and salt dissolve.

After the rice has rested, take off the lid and pour in the vinegar mixture.

Stir gently to mix everything together. Be careful not to mash or break the rice grains.

Let the rice cool down before using it for sushi, or serve it warm as a side dish.

Enjoy your homemade vinegared rice!

Notes

Preparing sushi rice is easy. An 11-years old could do it as long as they ask an adult for help with the stove and measuring ingredients, if needed.

Remember kids, cooking is more fun and safer when you do it with a grown-up, especially when using the stove or sharp tools.
